and darkness
She stood knee-deep before an ocean lurching in great swells. A backward glance found the same endless stretch of tempestuous blue. Distorted and undulating, the sky dripped down in viscous drops or just as likely the ocean was raining up. The surrealistic whole of the world was drenched in urgency for release. Ripples formed at the water's surface where the tips of her fingers trailed languidly along. She waded further on, even when the waters were already past waist high and the weight of the magnificent snowy gown was becoming burdensome to lug along in.
Nothing to go back to and everything to leave it all behind.
When she was unable to touch the sandy bottom she became swept away by the crashing waves. The fanned out weight of her skirts pulled her down deeper and deeper into the blue, but it was the undertow of no hope that kept her. First the calm. She held her breath evenly, blinking in the blue around her. Until flushed lips gaped in fright as her lungs burned to burst. A rush of water. And then sheer panic.
She thrashed wildly to resurface for just a breath again, but her struggle only worsened the dire. A look from up above, the sight of lithe, flowing spread of garment was almost lovely. In the lassitude of waiting for the end of it all, she looked up to a sudden flare of light. A glorious star. A tear for her. Descending just as her fear slowly hushed to a fade. The source of light didn't seem so far up... in wonder, she stretched out her hand to pluck this passing token shed for her... just beyond, just a little bit more... and... and then darkness...
